On-Site COVID Testing

COVID testing at the Lab is now self-service, replacing in-person testing on a set schedule. Employees and affiliates who work on site will be able to pick up a kit at one of two locations and return it to a lockbox to be picked up Monday through Thursday at 9 a.m. Results will usually be returned within 48 hours. Kits picked up on Thursdays before 9 a.m. will have results returned on Friday.

The Lab’s current testing company, BasisDx, will perform the COVID test, pick up completed kits, and drop off new kits. You cannot come on site solely to pick up a test kit. The kits are available in the Building 50 auditorium and Potter Street lobbies.

If you want to participate in the program:

  • Go to the BasisDx site to schedule an appointment time to drop off your kit. If you have never been tested for COVID through the Lab, you will be asked to complete a one-time consent form for testing. Scheduling allows BasisDx to estimate the number of kits needed. You do not need an appointment to pick up a kit. You can drop off the kit at any time; the vendor picks the kits up at 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday so it is best to drop it off before then.

  • The BasisDx website uses two-step authentication. You will be sent a code via email or text to continue to the next step.

  • Select a time to drop off your kit.

  • Go to either the Building 50 auditorium or Potter Street lobby to pick up your kit.

  • Perform the test following the posted instructions.

  • Return the kit to the same location.

  • BasisDx will send you a text and/or email when your sample is received at their lab.

  • BasisDx will send you an email or text with a link to the test results once they are released.

Make a new appointment every time you want to repeat the test. The appointment system will provide the vendor an estimate of the number of kits to stock at each site. Do not share the kit with family members or friends since the results will be returned to your health record.

A team member or supervisor is welcome to pick up several kits for Lab employees or affiliates to eliminate multiple trips. One person can also drop off multiple kits for processing. Completed samples will be stable for approximately one week as long as they are not exposed to high temperatures, such as sitting in a closed automobile. Returned kits will be kept in a lockbox located in either the Building 50 auditorium lobby or the Potter Street lobby until the vendor picks them up.

BasisDx will drop off kits when they pick up completed samples so that the site is continually stocked. There are illustrations on site and with the kit that provides information on how to perform a self-test. Testing Eligibility

Employees and Affiliates are eligible for this testing if they have completed the following steps:

    • Received supervisor authorization to be working at a Lab site

    • Have been assigned to, and accepted conditions of, a WPC Activity with the Lab’s COVID-19 controls

    • Completed LBL0012 Training (Working Safely At LBNL During COVID-19 Pandemic)

    • Are asymptomatic

You will need to electronically sign a consent form to schedule your test, which includes granting permission for your results to be shared with public health authorities and with the Lab's Health Services.
